My History With the Film:
The first Babysitter review was one of my very first posts on this site back three years ago to the day. I decided to revisit The Babysitter with my fiancée in September 2020 right before Killer Queen released. We then watched Killer Queen the following weekend and were both surprised by how much we enjoyed it.
What The Film Is About (Non-Spoiler):
Two years after Cole survived a satanic blood cult, he’s living another nightmare: high school. And the demons from his past? Still making his life hell.
What I Liked About It:
-I went in with low expectations, because honestly, how do you top the first film? Luckily, the director McG, brought back familiar faces and added a couple of new ones. So, the core cast that I enjoyed in the first film is back, along with an expanded role for Emily Alyn Woods (Melanie). Jenna Ortega (Phoebe) was the new comer to the group and was a very welcomed addition.
-Like most sequels, everything was bigger. The kills were bigger, the location was bigger, and the CGI was bigger. I was worried it would go too over the top and into parody territory but it remained true to the tone of the first film and made for a terrific horror/comedy.
-The script did a great job of spreading around the screen time for all the characters. No one felt left out or overlooked.
-I love movies that make you question the protagonist’s sanity, and I love how no one believed Cole after the first movie (and rightfully so). It just added another layer to the story which gave us some great ways to incorporate his father and Melanie.
What I Didn’t Like About It:
-I would say the movie is not as funny as the first one, so that’s not something I didn’t like, but it just wasn’t quite as funny.
-The film was lacking the chemistry that Samara Weaving (Bee) had with Judah Lewis (Cole).
::SPOILERS::–I thought Emily Alyn Wood did a decent job stepping into Samara Weaving’s shoes for a portion of the film, but by the end I felt like her character had run out of juice. Luckily, Samara was there to pick up the pieces and help close out the movie. ::END SPOILERS::
-McG has said there will be a third film if fan’s want to see it.
The Babysitter Killer Queen is an enjoyable time. It’s over the top, a little grotesque, and funny. It’s not groundbreaking nor will it probably break into anybody’s Top 25 movies list. However, it’s a fantastic easy watch for the Halloween season and I really hope a third movie is made.
I rate The Babysitter Killer Queen a three out of five and say its worth a rental.
