My History With the Episode:
When Supernatural debuted in 2005, I was a huge fan. I religiously watched the show for the first five seasons and then sporadically up through season ten. After that, I ran out of steam and haven’t watched much since. However, when I heard that a Scooby-Doo episode was being made, I knew I couldn’t miss that. So, I purchased a copy of the show on VUDU once it aired and sat down and enjoyed the mashup.
I decided to revisit the episode after re-watching the pilot episode of Supernatural and found myself laughing and enjoying the two worlds combining.
What The Episode Is About (Non-Spoiler):
Sam and Dean are sucked into a Scooby-Doo cartoon and bring with them real ghosts and death.
What I Liked About It:
-Dean’s hitting on Daphne was hilarious.
What I Didn’t Like About It:
-If I was showing someone this as their first episode of Supernatural, I don’t think it would sell them on the series, especially after such a weak opening with the stuffed dinosaur.
Additional Notes:
-There is a mini-Mystery Machine in every live action scene.
-The Malt Shop is the same diner as Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe in Riverdale.
-There is a super short cameo by Scrappy-Doo during the “door chase” scene.
Rating:
Scoobynatural isn’t the best episode of Supernatural or Scooby-Doo, but when compared to a lot of the other Scooby-Doo celebrity episodes/movies as of late, it’s brilliant. I love that WB was allowed to feature the Scooby gang breaking down, dealing with real deaths, and ghosts. Playing with the tropes was a lot of fun and made this episode a must watch. I rate Scoobynatural as four out of five and say it’s a must watch for fans of either series.
